The first time I got a wig I was so excited. It was my only wig at the time so I wore it so frequently that it went from looking like this;
to looking like this;
Just in a matter of weeks. Why? Because I did not know how to take care of my wig. I don’t want you to make the same mistakes I made. That is why I am sharing this article with you.
How to take care of your wigs
Wash wigs Less Frequently
No one should wash their wig ever so often. Imagine washing your favorite tee-shirt everyday or every week. It will definitely lose its color and weaken its texture. Overtime, your favorite tee won’t be your favorite anymore.
The same goes for your wig. It will lose its shine. If you’re rotating your wigs, you should be able to wait a few days between washes. If you only have one wig, wait a few days between washes to maintain your wig’s natural luster.
Not washing your hair well.
We can all agree on one thing: It’s one thing to wash your hair and it’s another to wash your hair properly. A lot of people don’t know that there are techniques for washing a wig. It goes beyond shampooing and rinsing it off with water.
Follow these techniques when washing your wigs:
- STEP ONE Soak your wig in soapy water for a few minutes. Then, gently comb the shampoo through the hair. Do not rub or massage the product into the wig as that will result in residue buildup, which clumps your wig hair and possibly cause permanent damage.
- STEP TWO Gently rinse the wig in clean, warm (not hot) water and comb through. Repeat this process until all the soap is gone.
- STEP THREE Repeat steps one and two with your conditioning product.
- STEP FOUR Detangle your wig immediately with a detangling brush.
- STEP FIVE Air dry your hair. NEVER use a hair dryer on your wig. The hot air will permanently damage a human hair or heat-friendly synthetic wig and completely melt a synthetic wig.
Using low quality products on your wig.
We both know you did not spend mere chicken change to acquire this wig so why be stingy with the products to maintain it?
Your wig needs food!! Say this with me: I must use conditioners,oils and shampoos strictly meant for wigs. This is because traditional hair sprays, oils and the likes cause residue buildup on a wig and these change the look of the wig.

Keeping your wig just anywhere.
Where do you keep your wig after you take it off?
After taking off your wig, keep your wig on a dummy. Not a bag. Not a nail. Not a table. Not a chair. But an hair dummy. It keeps the hair in shape. It also prevents contamination from dust(when you cover it) and liquid and other things that can reduce the quality and shelf life of your wig.
Wearing only one wig
Wigs have a way spicing up the way you look. Why settle for just one look when you can have it all?
Not saying you shouldn’t wear wigs everyday, but do not wear one wig everyday. Show your wig some love and give it a break by wearing another wig.
Imagine wearing a shoe for every single day of the year. That’s right. It will get tired and lose its shine eventually. Wigs come in different sizes, lengths, colors and styles. Why settle for just one? Need to get some more wigs? Check out some of our wigs on rositahairs.com
